Arrangements have been made, plans laid out, text telegraphs sent. I’m going to look at this Rabbit tonight. And very possibly bringing it home
Wish me luck boys and girls

Congrats! I grew up in a MkI Jetta and miss the simplicity of those cars...

Awesome! One of us bought a 1991 Cabby for our first cheap car challenge and ended up keeping it. They’re charming little cars to drive. His is an auto, so I can only guess the manual is more fun.
One thing to watch out for on these is the tops are crazy expensive. They’re 4 pieces, including a layer of horse hair, and upwards of $2,000 to replace. The one pictured looks good, so I wouldn’t be worried.

The seller claims the tops is in good shape and water tight, maybe we’ll get lucky and it’ll rain while I’m looking at t

If you’re PNW (which for some reason I think you are), if the top leaks the interior will show it. The nice thing about the tops being so crazy complicated is they also have a lot of adjustment too.

I’m in northern WI. But I’ll be sure to dig around and look for evidence of a leak

If I were to get another Waterville be I think a cabriolet mk1 like that would be it. Simple car, not expensive, and a world of mods out there..

It’s that world of mods that scares me a bit, I can see myself getting carried away, especially since I’m not allowed to mod my e90. At the minimum I want to change the steering wheel to my Momo wood one, and lower it a good inch and a half. It’s already got a Webber carb so that’s nice. I would love to someday drop a TDI ALH ( 99-02 1.9l) in it

Both my mk2 and mk3 Jettas ended up getting fun bits- suspension is cheap and easy, Euro pieces are easy to find, and they are very slow car fast in the end..
My 9o was bought for $2k, another $500 or so worth of parts and it was the funnest little beater I’ve ever had.
